MEXICAN TRADITION-DAY OF THE DEAD.

dsc08716-copy
The Day Of The Dead is on its fourth year as a celebration in Murphys. Here is a staged family out for a ride...
dsc08718-copy
I don't know quite how different it would be in Mexico, but this is America, so of course, the dog rides in the back with the kids.
dsc08730-copy
One of the vacation rentals puts on displays, and this year's theme was references to Frieda Kahlo. Beautifully done.

Folklorico representing various states in Mexico with traditional dances and  costuming held in Murphys Park.
dsc08742-copy
Kids and adults dress up and paint their faces in sync with the celebration. This group was watching the dancers with rapt attention.
dsc08771-copy
Like a statue, this little girl didn't move once during the whole set of dancers.

When this fellow came out with two, long blades, I knew we were in for something special.
dsc08782-copy
Flashing blades at considerable speed, over head and under and between his legs made for quite a show. But then, a repeat with a blindfold on had me gasping.
dsc08783-copy
No small feat. And with dire warnings from the MC, "don't try this at home."
dsc08779-copy
Folkorico music always very fast and invigorating, the costuming beautiful. Very enjoyable. Jim attended a Day of the Dead in Mexico and said the music was deafening.
dsc08787-copy
A tourist attraction, with staged displays made for a nice outing, but for some people, the celebration is very real, about the death of and remembrance of a loved one.

GOING THE DISTANCE.

DSC06582 (Copy)

In Oregon, on Thursday, my cabinets were delivered. They wait installation by another crew.
DSC06584 (Copy)

I'm certain the delivery guys have to be careful. There was a tear in one box. I took a picture. They denied they had torn it. I could feel around inside and could detect no scratches. Two bugs came out of the hole. One was a  roach. Nope, they said, that bug must have just crawled in. One big cabinet barely fit through the sliding glass door. It scratched the paint on the door. Nope, that scratch must have been there. It was almost comic, but the scratch was no big deal.

On Friday morning, Jim drove north and I drove south. I arrived in Davis, about 330 miles later, to meet Cedric and Virginia. Cedric had just arrived after a five hour drive from Mendocino. We loaded into their Prius, the five of us, within about 15 minutes and hit the road for Reno to attend my oldest grandson's graduation. Actually, not to attend it, but to be there for dinner and recognition.
DSC06587 (Copy)

This is Momma Laurie who stated that her oldest son, Stewart,  is the first in her family to obtain a college degree. In my family and my husband's family, my two daughters were the first to obtain college degrees. Seated next to Laurie is Cedric, his sons, Theo and Owen and Poppa Ken.
DSC06588 (Copy)

On the other side of the table, Virginia and my two oldest grandsons, Mason and Stewart. Of course conversation all around table was much about what will you do with your life, from the youngest, Theo, who thinks he'll probably be a vet, to our graduate, Stewart who wants to go to Japan and teach English as a second language, and, in the process learn to speak Japanese.
DSC06599 (Copy)

After dinner, we spent some time in Ken and Laurie's room, chatting. We drank a bit of wine and enjoyed our short time together after the long drives.
DSC06603 (Copy)

On Saturday morning, while Stewart and family got ready to attend graduation, at his suggestion, we went to a local breakfast joint all the locals adore. It is Peg's Glorified Eggs and Ham. The menu choices were wonderful and varied. The food delicious and the service excellent. Thanks, Stew.
DSC06604 (Copy)

The boys had some variation of pancakes/waffle which came with has hash-browns and fruit or meat.
DSC06605 (Copy)

I had a vegetarian eggs Benedict, that was delicious with spinach, onions, mushrooms, tomato, avocado and cheese. Yum.
DSC06613 (Copy)

After breakfast we drove to the University of California Field Station for Virginia's meeting on invasive plants.
DSC06608 (Copy)

It was partly gravel road to get there. No fancy quarters, people pitch their tents.
DSC06609 (Copy)

She reported to the office to join her peers.
DSC06612 (Copy)

She noticed a nest of baby birds and took a picture for me. I love seeing baby birds and especially watching them fledge. She will get a ride home from a colleague.

Cedric drove us  back to Davis,  and for me, another two-hour drive back to Murphys. I guess  I can safely say, we went the distance. Laurie promised to take gobs of pictures of the graduation ceremony.  I hope to see all of my grandsons graduate college. Five more to go.

MARCH BIRTHDAYS.

DSC03980 (Copy)
Growing up in a big family, we didn't celebrate birthdays, other than to have a home-made cake and possibly your favorite meal for that day. In our family we have two March birthdays, my son Doug and my grandson Mason. Mason's uncle Mike, I discovered, drinks craft beers and offered me my very fav, Black Butte Porter. Now, that makes it a celebration in itself, selfish person that I am.
DSC03990 (Copy)
Doug turned 50 and he has recently joined the 21st century and now has an email address. He and younger sister, Virginia, appeared to be in deep, serious, conversation with that computer.
DSC03984 (Copy)
I had an opportunity to talk to my 14-year-old grandson, Owen, about our upcoming trip to Turkey, explaining how the trip works, what to pack, etc.
DSC03985 (Copy)
Mason, the other birthday boy, age 19, told Owen, (and Theo, looking on, since he is the next 14-year-old to get a trip with grandma), that the way they stop the buses on these tours is to let it run down a hill and hit a bunch of cars to stop it. Of course, we had a good laugh about that, because that is what happened when we were in Thailand. Mason was one of three people still left on the bus when it went careening down a hill and the driver had to run into a bunch of parked cars to stop it. It tipped over on it's side and no one was seriously hurt.
DSC03991 (Copy)
Ken faces his barbeque so he can get smoke in his eyes. He barbequed a bunch of ribs and chicken. The rest of us brought food to go along with the meat, and hey, any reason to have a party and good food. Why not?
DSC03989 (Copy)
My daughter-in-law Laurie is so grateful that she and Ken were able to move out of Vegas and back to California. Her brother Mike and sister-in-law Ramona Henniger, live in Lodi where Laurie was born and grew up.
DSC03995 (Copy)
One of her best high school friends, Diane, came to help celebrate. It is nice to get back to your roots and she is a happy camper.
DSC03987 (Copy)
Cedric likes to plink on his guitar. Both Mason and his brother Stewart play.
DSC03993 (Copy)
And Cedric discovered that Mike is a pretty good guitarist and played in a small band when he was young.
DSC03994 (Copy)
Jim found that he has a lot in common with Diane's significant other, Randy, who rides motorcycles, does a lot of camping and now likes going on trips in his 5th wheel. He kind of envies Jim's lifestyle of being a full-time RVer.
DSC03999 (Copy)
And, brother Bill, has gotten much of his sight back and no longer wears a patch. He was left with a bad astigmatism in his right eye and will soon have glasses to correct the problem. But, it is a great relief to no longer have to face double vision or wear a patch over that eye.  I kind of liked the looks of the patch. Thought he made a great looking pirate, but he couldn't toss it soon enough. That's fair. Hey, good food, good company, whose birthday is next?

CHRISTMAS COOKIE PARTY.

DSC02317 (Copy)

Daughter-in-law, Laurie hosted a cookie making party.
DSC02328 (Copy)

Laurie and my sister-in-law-to-be,Theresa, had dual mixers going and gobs and gobs of cookies were the result under their expert hands.
DSC02321 (Copy)

Stewart and Mason, home from college for the season, enjoyed the snacks and the game and the food and just being home.
DSC02332 (Copy)

Abbie and Anthony kept themselves entertained until there was room on the counter for rolling the sugar cookies.
DSC02330 (Copy)

Ken always likes me to taste the latest brew he has discovered. I rolled sugar cookie dough for the little ones.
DSC02335 (Copy)

Anthony and Abbie had never cut and decorated cookies before.
DSC02339 (Copy)

Norma got into the act along with the kids. She decided to make it a family tradition since the kids enjoyed it so much.
DSC02342 (Copy)

Laurie couldn’t resist decorating a cookie.
DSC02338 (Copy)

Doug, too, whose idea it was in the first place since he remembered doing the same as a kid, one of our family traditions every year.
DSC02320 (Copy)

Some of us recognized the best part of the party was not the cookies, but the lunch. Friend Tynna swooned. We had friend Norma’s enchiladas, and chocoflan, Doug’s turkey chili verde, I brought spinach souffle, that everyone loves. And, doncha know we all enjoyed  cookie tasting.
DSC02340 (Copy)

And, then the bakers took a break, enjoying the great food everyone brought to share. Yum!

AN IMPROMPTU VISIT.

DSC02186 (Copy)

My son Ken and his wife, Laurie stopped in with their two little dachshunds for  an hour to play in the snow. They went out and threw snowballs and watched the dogs discover  "cold white stuff." We had a brew and a chat.  A nice interlude. Even nicer because Ken has not lived in this county since he graduated from Bret Harte High School in 1979. I really like the idea that my kids live close enough to casually stop by.  All but one, Kristanne, who will stay in Las Vegas, at least until her son graduates high school.
I spent part of the day going through old picture albums and travel scrapbooks, with some Christmas carols playing, and  a cuppa warm cider for my trip down memory lane.
IMG_0130 (Copy)

On my machine, I have "scrapbooks" too. I found this one of  lighting the tree from 2011.
DSC04361 (Copy)

And this one of Laurie and Kristanne sharing a glass of wine.  Kristanne and Virginia and their families will be missing this year, so we've planned a get together that everyone can attend in January.
Even when you are retired, weekends are special. It is easier to relax and enjoy the season. Hey, am I getting to rocking chair age? Or what?   I'm, lovin' every minute of it.

RAH! RAH! RAH! IT'S OVER

High School Graduations are at hand. For some students, high school is a breeze of wonderful friendships and activities. They’ve been in school practically all of their young lives. And now stands before me, this grandson, Alec Dane Pedersen.

We adults send them out into the world with great expectations of success, of preparation for a new and independent life. We hang a lot on them during  this poignant ceremony. Hope is big here for them and us, their parents, grandparents, and friends who know them. And, there is worry, as well. Will they make it?  Will they see the job that puts dollars in their pocket from the local Fish And Grill, or MacDonalds,  will they see it? Will they know that down the line this is forever?  Forever, unless they prepare now for a better life? It’s easy to get caught in the now instead of once again, taking up  more years at the helm of teachers and books.
What I found unique about this ceremony for Alec and his peers was the reading, by the teachers, of a statement each student wrote about what they expected of themselves in the coming years. They chose a quote that from a great scientist, philosopher, artist, inventor, explorer or statesman, and related that advice to their own lives.
Alec is a bright, intelligent young man who is enrolled at Irvine Junior College and expects to get his AA degree and then decide what direction he will take.
Like his father, Alec has personality, charm and wit, and no matter where life takes him, his adventure will be interesting and wonderful.
As a family, we are oh, so proud of you, lad!  And, your young brother Austin adores you and expects to be just like you.  All of our dreams can come true if we but have the courage to pursue them.
