KLINKERBRINK WINERY AND FAREWELL

IMG_0374 (Copy)
Clark (left) is my youngest brother at age 60. My son moved just up the road from him 3 years ago and instead of an uncle/nephew relationship, they became fast friends. Both Clark and Ken are members of the Klinkerbrick Winery in Lodi. Klinkerbrick puts on a party every year for its members and friends of members.

This year's  theme was creole food with a Dixieland Band. The trombonist in the middle sings just like Satchmo. The deep voice comes as a surprise.
IMG_0362 (Copy)

The wives, Laurie and Theresa have become good friends. Both women like to cook, enjoy trading recipes and just socializing. Bad news has a way of tainting the day, as Laurie told them a coyote entered the backyard of their new home in Reno, Nevada, and killed Bix and Coco their two mini-dachshunds, leaving a bloody patio, windows, rocks, walls-evidencing the violence of their deaths. It is hard to come to terms with such an end to your fur children. Healing takes a long time.

I've learned that there is therapy in discussing it, and talking it through. Stewart Matzek, in the background, toasted the dogs along with all of us. He represents good news to balance the bad. Next week he goes through orientation, a three day process, before he flies to Japan with several other applicants to teach English as a second language. He will be placed in a high-school in Komatsu, Japan, a coastal city of about 100,000 people. To say we are excited about that turn of events is an understatement. He already has a small apartment and bought the furniture and appliances from its former owner.
IMG_0366 (Copy)

The band was a hoot. Some people danced on the grass or played a balancing game with sticks.
IMG_0367 (Copy)

Doncha just love a banjo and a tuba? And the Old Ghost wine was a smooth, delightful concoction. Everyone's fave.
IMG_0369 (Copy)

Surrounded by juicy, bursting-with-flavor-grapes, and green, green grass. Tin Roof Catering supplied the food. A delectable pork stew among the choices,  with ice cream stirred in wine for dessert.
IMG_0375 (Copy)

All too soon, it was time to part.
IMG_0379 (Copy)

Laurie and Stewart, back to Nevada in her new Mini-Cooper, with all-wheel drive since snow is a factor in the winter.
IMG_0378 (Copy)

And Ken, back to his residence, though temporary, in Santa Clara. He'll be taking over his new job in Reno two months from now. Meanwhile, they live apart for a while longer. Both are counting the days.
As my mom got up in years, looking at the downside, she would say, Life is good. And, it is.

TOURIST IN MY OWN TOWN.

DSC08114 (Copy)

I feel fortunate that I have a friend who not only brings me brownies, but will, at the merest suggestion, drive me downtown Murphys where we pretend to be tourists. That is Jan Stewart. Always ready to seize the day.
DSC08115 (Copy)

I hadn't been to Hovey's tasting room in ages, nor had I seen this clever sign.
DSC08116 (Copy)

Inside I was pleased and surprised by the variety of craft beers they support. The public likes wine but they also like good beer.
DSC08117 (Copy)

Another sign drew us into Frog's Tooth, a wine I'd never sampled.
DSC08121 (Copy)

At 10:00 a.m. neither of us were in the mood for wine tasting, but they had a barrel full of good reds to be had for $12 a bottle.
DSC08126 (Copy)

Of course, because of Mark Twain, frogs are a prominent feature in Calaveras County, but what I liked here is the warmth and friendliness of the staff. A very inviting atmosphere.
DSC08125 (Copy)

This customer is wearing a shirt from a tasting room in  an old school-house, I believe she said in Grass Valley. It reflects the grammar school punishment of writing on the black board over and over again, I Promise Not To Hit Tommy, or some such. Cute.
DSC08132 (Copy)

Town was loaded with motorcycles, all coming for the "Jumps", as they relate to the Calaveras Fair and Frog Jumping Jubilee. Nationally famous after its small beginnings.  I remember a picture of Little Flower, Governor LaGuardia who attended the Jumps as fascination with jumping a frog spread far and wide.
DSC08133 (Copy)

Both bikers, the guy on the left hugged Jan and said,"I know you!"  He is her chimney sweep. His buddy said, "If anybody had told me I'd be a biker with multiple tattoos on my body, I'd have said yer crazy." I had to laugh to find they are locals from Murphys. Tourists just like us.
DSC08141 (Copy)

I liked this gal's leathers and took a picture and she said, "No, no. You caught me with a phone and I'm constantly pushing people I know to put their damned phone away and look up."  So, she posed for me on her bike.
DSC08143 (Copy)

Creative. Guess we can call her Spider Woman, and, by the way, she is from Murphys.
DSC08130 (Copy)

She looked askance at the big hogs lining the street and said, "If one of these guys tips his bike over, he will not be able to pick it up by himself."  We concluded they are for show and pride of ownership as well as performance.
DSC08151 (Copy)

There were some out-of-towners.
DSC08153 (Copy)

I wanted a picture of this guy's curled mustache because it reminded me of Joe Cardoza, a former neighbor and local character who grew his curled and waxed mustache about seven inches long for the local Whiskerino Contest. He had too much to drink and went for a haircut. Jack, the barber was a known prankster and cut half of his mustache off, I expect with Joe's consent. I thought it was cruel, even so.
DSC08139 (Copy)

There were street musicians.
DSC08154 (Copy)

The Murphys Hotel hired a band. The courtyard was packed with people eating, enjoying the music and even getting up to dance in the tight space around the musicians.
DSC08159 (Copy)

A couple local vets told us they placed 400 flags on veteran graves with Memorial Day coming up. They do it every year.
DSC08160 (Copy)
Among  those who served I knew Norm Tanner and a couple others. Norm was a good friend to my husband. I'll be sure to remember those close to me who were vets; I may not get to a grave, but there will be a knot in my heart has I put out the flag on my deck.

HAPPY NEW YEAR, 2016

DSC07507 (Copy)
Play a thin tune
on a paper horn
Old is dying
New is born
Scatter confetti
over the floor
Sweep an old year
Out the door
Blow up a wish
in a bright balloon
Whisper dreams
To a midnight moon
Play a loud tune
on a paper horn
Old is dying
New is born

AFFORDABLE GIFTS OF ART.

DSC07134 (Copy)Each year, our Calaveras County Arts Council hosts an affordable art show just in time for Christmas. Amador and Tuolumne Counties have similar open house events. Affordable is different for different folks. Patty Rayne does huge paintings of horses like this one in the $750 category. Her love for horses shows in her work.
DSC07140 (Copy)On a different budget, maybe for a child's choice, are small mini paintings that are nice for a side table.
DSC07141 (Copy)I usually buy something at this event, but I have no room on my walls and I'm downsizing. I had a hard time passing up this rooster. I've had chickens in every house I've ever lived in and this one reminded me of a rooster we used to have that the kids named Fat King Crow.
DSC07142 (Copy)I enjoy getting my art "fix" even if I don't buy anything. I admired Sonya Zeigler's landscapes and so many others. But what is really incredible about artists in our own backyard is the amazing diversity of talent.
DSC07137 (Copy)Layered ceramics.
DSC07143 (Copy)Etched ceramics.
DSC07146 (Copy)Pots of every kind and shape.
DSC07147 (Copy)Beautiful wooden bowls, platters and honey servers.
DSC07156 (Copy)The things artists do with gourds... an art form that has become very popular in our neck of the woods.
DSC07161 (Copy)Unique one-of-a-kind pieces like this carved skull.
DSC07153 (Copy)Something new to me is photography on canvas from Gordy Long. I swear, Jim and I have been on this very beach in Washington State. I'm curious about how it is done? At $18 very affordable.
DSC07160 (Copy)The gallery has jewelry makers, paintings, and cards for all occasions year around. But at this event, you can find a Christmas card for a favorite friend that is a gift in itself.
DSC07165 (Copy)One table was given over to the feast of finger foods with cider and wine available to drink. Festive and fun because I always manage to see a friend, either in person, or on a canvas.
Enjoying the Christmas season is opening up to joy at every turn and I love it.  Merry Christmas.

BOUNCE FROM OREGON TO MURPHYS.

It has been long between blogs. I find when I'm busy, I'm really an activist at heart and am inspired to rant about the current incomprehensible political situation, which Jim dislikes.  I have not been traveling!  So I rant. Jim reminded me this morning it has been a year to the day (yesterday) since I left the motorhome and took up the business of building a new house and all that transpires both expected and unexpected.

While in Oregon, I got news of the awful Butte Fire from that distance, chagrined that my friend Deborah Mullen,  a co-worker at the Calaveras Enterprise, was burned out. A devastating experience.
Today, after clearing through pounds of mail, I gathered clothing, shoes, tables, chairs, jackets, and stuff you think people will need in the aftermath of a complete loss of everything of a normal household. Deborah posted a picture on FB  of herself and Husband Steve; "We have each other," she said. Always one to look on the bright side.

After connecting with several recovery, resource sights, it became very clear that the stuff I gathered was not what is needed right now. It is more on the order, of paper plates, paper towels, face soap, q-tips, wash cloths,  canned foods, powdered milk, peanut butter, fresh vegetables, flashlights, lanterns, batteries, ice chests, water carriers and so on. So, tomorrow, I'll assemble a different set of household goods, and make my way to Mountain Ranch, then Valley Springs where daughter-in-law Laurie is holding much of my important paperwork taken at my request from my house during the voluntary evacuation order. I'll start carrying my camera again, if I can find it.

My last day in Oregon, I went to a bridge repair meeting and met some neighbors from the private road we share, many of whom,  I'd never met previously.
I also invited 12 people to a wine and nibble about 4 p.m. Saturday,  before my expected leave on Sunday morning. I thought some of the neighbors might be curious about what my place looked like after watching the slow progress from the outside over eight months of building it.

Hmmm. Four people showed up, three from one family. All but  four answered with some enthusiasm, suggesting they'd be glad to come.
I thoroughly enjoyed those that came.  I'm not a novice at entertaining guests, but I've never been so royally stood up in my life, and it makes me chuckle that I've had that experience at this time in my life. If I were a young bride, I'd have been hurt. Not one person bothered to tell me they could not or would not come. I thought it was strange but those that came,  more than made up for those that did not.
It has been fun furnishing a new house, with nearly all second-hand items and attempting to keep it neat and not over clutter it with stuff as I am wont to do.  I'll eventually get pictures hung and curtains up and take photos; my goal to hopefully find this page a bit more often.

ciao-Mary

CRAB MAC AND CHEESE?

Never thought I'd order macaroni and cheese for a festive New Years dinner. With crab it was marvelous; served at Alchemy in Murphys, along with lobster bisque, cornbread, a glass of Frog Tooth pino grigio, and a cappuccino, chocolate mousse for desert. Decadent Yum. Thank you Ken and Laurie for the lovely dinner.

Then a walk to the Murphys Hotel for a cocktail and some loud, fun noise of people rejoicing, enjoying. Home early. Listened to my Antsy McClain Trailer Park Troubadors dvd two times. Rang in the year with the television set and feel great this morning.

Merry have we met
Merry have we been
Merry may we part
And, merry meet again.

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE. MAY 2015 BE YOUR BEST YEAR EVER.

MURHYS FREE CONCERT IN THE PARK.

DSC06926 (Copy)

The first Friday of each month, the Business People/Community Club host a free concert in the park. A local caterer provides a meal to buy, or you can bring your own food and drink and just enjoy the burbling creek, a bit of sunshine, the company of your neighbors and friends and have a good time dancing or just listening to the music.  I love Murphys. Above is Glorious Gloria and Dennis Graves listening to someone who stopped by our table to visit.
DSC06928 (Copy)

Jan brought a pesto cheese bread to snack on that was super delicious. She was about to take off her sweater and go swimming in the creek, I think.
DSC06929 (Copy)

The kids love it at the creek and don't hesitate to jump in. How many towns have a creek flowing through the middle of it for all to enjoy?
DSC06932 (Copy)

And Donna, with the cutest hat.
DSC06931 (Copy)

The Reagans, I never see anymore except at events like this. It is my fault because I travel so much.
DSC06934 (Copy)

I didn't dance this time, but, when I do get home, I'm soooo glad I live in Murphys.

FAMILY SKI TRIP, MOUNT ROSE,INCLINE VILLAGE

DSC02576 (Copy)

Incline Village, Nevada sits on the north side of Lake Tahoe. Living in the Sierra Nevadas we have a choice of what route to take over the passes. Laurie drove Ken, Doug and I up over Highway 88, which she considers the most scenic. Normally at this time of year, snow covered 88 would require chains and could have closures. Lakes were covered with thin ice, and dabs of snow looked painted on the mountain fissures.
DSC02578 (Copy)

Kris came up from Las Vegas. Virginia and Cedric took Highway 80 which is a fast four lane thoroughfare and serves the bigger populations from the Bay Area.
Highway 4 and 108 are my other two favs, but 88 is prettiest.
DSC02584 (Copy)

The first night, we played and noshed.
DSC02587 (Copy)

A little wine, games, and plenty of snacks.DSC02589 (Copy)

Kris made the observation that Ken has lived at one time or another with all of his siblings. He is currently sharing an apartment with his youngest sister. Both are away from their respective homes for their jobs. Ken is extremely neat and Virginia likes to leave dishes in the sink and clothes hanging over the backs of chairs-til later.  Hmmm!
DSC02592 (Copy)

Virginia taught us this loud, raucous game she learned from her Italian brother-in-law. Fast moving, arms waving, card auctioning, gambling card game, a matter of luck, so the kids of any age have an equal chance of winning one of four pots. Everyone could put in a dollar, two dollars, a per-determined equal amount.  Kris, Theo, Myself, and Austin each won a pot. But the laughter was wonderful.
DSC02590 (Copy)

Laurie brought a pot of chili from home so we had and easy dinner and lots of time to catch up with each other. This was our family Christmas since we couldn't all get together this past December.
DSC02605 (Copy)

On Saturday morning, everyone geared up for skiing, except Doug, Kristanne, Laurie and I. Kristanne is "Lodge Fluff." I'm the photographer and Doug and Laurie stayed behind and played cards and rested. Ken hadn't skiied in 13 years and all but Virginia and Ced had lesson packages that give a price break for skiing.
DSC02627 (Copy)

Laurie and I were thinking we might  do cross country, or maybe snowshoe since neither of us like downhill. There really wasn't enough snow.
DSC02606 (Copy)

Owen gets fitted for his boots.
DSC02607 (Copy)

Virginia, Cedric, Theo and Owen all go at their own pace on different runs. Owen is boarding. Theo is skiing. Skis are shorter and rounder than any I'd ever seen.
DSC02609 (Copy)

Austin, who had never skiied wanted to snowboard because he likes his skate boarding.
DSC02620 (Copy)

The kids lessons were at station one. That bit about falling?
DSC02610 (Copy)

The instructor just came up to him and knocked him over numerous times. Taught him HOW to fall so he wouldn't put his hands out and break a wrist. He had a two-hour morning lesson and a one hour afternoon private lesson. The instructor said Austin was the best student he ever worked with at that age. Kudos!
DSC02612 (Copy)

The "bunny hill" of station one has a tramway up the hill where everyone, kids and adults can practice their newly learned skills.
DSC02614 (Copy)

Ken decided he didn't want to go back to work with a broken anything and Virginia went with him on the bunny slope.DSC02618 (Copy)

She coached him for a few runs on cutting and stopping and turning before they headed for the lifts.
DSC02623 (Copy)

We all met around lunch time and then everyone went all out on the slopes. Kris and I kept track of spare gear as everyone shed jackets or pants, or whatever. Virginia referred to us as the "mules."  The weather was amazingly warm.
DSC02626 (Copy)

Back at our rental condo, which sleeps 16 people, Cedric made the pies.
DSC02635 (Copy)

Laurie made a beautiful salad. She said she was always salad queen as a child at home.
DSC02632 (Copy)

Ken made kabobs. (He wanted to steal the barbeque pit but it wouldn't fit in the car.

DSC02597 (Copy)

I roasted a turkey breast and we toasted our good fortune and grand gathering.
DSC02640 (Copy)

Kris surprised Doug with a basket of goodies, as in Ben Gay, Anti Diarrheal meds, vitamin container, gas relief, all that over-the-hill stuff because his next birthday will be his 50th.

DSC02637 (Copy)

And we all decided Cedric should give up his science PHD and become a pie chef. I didn't get a picture of his apple pie. Life is not only good but delicious.
